シャトー・レ・カルム・オー・ブリオンは、ボルドーのペサック・レオニャンに位置する名高いシャトーです。400年以上にわたる歴史の中で、所有者が驚くほど少ないことでも知られています。もともとは広大なオー・ブリオンの領地の一部で、1584年、オー・ブリオンの領主ジャン・ド・ポンタックによって、この土地がカルメル会の修道士たちに寄進されました。修道士たちは約200年にわたりこの地でブドウを栽培しましたが、フランス革命によってその歴史は突如として幕を閉じ、所有地は国有財産として接収されました。

シャトー・レ・カルム・オー・ブリオンが所有する10ヘクタールのブドウ畑は、近隣の第1級格付けシャトーであるシャトー・オー・ブリオンやシャトー・ラ・ミッション・オー・ブリオンと同じ歴史的な丘陵地のテロワールに位置しています。土壌は、粘土と砂の上に広がる標高の高い砂礫質のテラスによって形成されています。一方で、栽培されるブドウ品種の構成は左岸としては異例で、カベルネ・フランが40％という非常に高い割合を占めています。このカベルネ・フラン主体の植樹構成が、ワインにシルキーな質感と、スミレや野生のハーブを思わせる華やかで高揚感のある香りをもたらしています。
セラーは、世界的デザイナーのフィリップ・スタルクと建築家リュック・アルセーヌ＝アンリによって設計され、プーグ川の河床に直接据えられるような独創的な構造を持っています。醸造では全房発酵を積極的に取り入れ、穏やかな抽出を行うことで、明瞭なアロマと、きめ細かく親しみやすいタンニンを引き出しています。熟成には、テラコッタ製アンフォラ、オーク樽、ステンレスタンク、コンクリートタンクなど、さまざまな容器が用いられます。
シャトー・レ・カルム・オー・ブリオンは、ボルドーの中でも最も個性的かつ前衛的なスタイルを持つシャトーのひとつです。力強い奥行きと凝縮感を備えながら、同時に驚くほどのフレッシュさを表現しています。20～30年にわたる熟成にも十分に耐えうる一方で、極めて洗練されたタンニンによって、若いうちからも楽しむことのできるワインです。

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a prestigious estate located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux. It has had remarkably few owners in its more than 400-year history. Originally part of the broader Haut-Brion estate, the land on which it stands was gifted in 1584 by Jean de Pontac, lord of Haut-Brion, to the Carmelite friars. The friars cultivated vineyards here for nearly two hundred years, but their tenure ended abruptly during the French Revolution, when the property was seized as a national asset. In 1840, the confiscated estate was auctioned off and purchased by the Léon Colin family. Their descendants, the Chantecailles, devoted years to enhancing the property, adding a château and landscaped grounds, before selling it to its current owner, Patrice Pichet, in 2010. The sale set a record price for Bordeaux vineyard land at the time.
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion’s 10 hectares of vineyards share historic hilltop terroir alongside the nearby First Growth giants of Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion—elevated gravelly terraces over clay and sand. However, the estate’s plantings are atypical for the Left Bank, favouring an unusually high proportion of Cabernet Franc (40%). This dominant planting gives the resulting wine silkiness and an intense, lifted aromatic profile defined by violets and wild herbs.
In the cellar—designed by legendary creator Philippe Starck and architect Luc Arsène-Henry and anchored directly into the bed of the Peugue River—winemaking relies heavily on whole-cluster fermentation and gentle extraction to achieve aromatic clarity and fine-grained, approachable tannins. The wine is matured in a variety of vessels, including terracotta amphorae, oak barrels, stainless steel tanks, and concrete vats.
As one of the most distinctive and avant-garde styles in Bordeaux, Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion successfully merges intense depth and concentration with remarkable freshness. While the wine can comfortably age for 20–30 years, its ultra-refined tannins make it a delight even in its youth.
