約40年間にわたりパオロ・デ・マルキはイタリアの偉大なワイン、トスカーナのサンジョヴェーゼ品種100%の「チェパレッロ」を世に送り出してきました。それと共に1970年代から、彼の家族が故郷ピエモンテに所有していた小さなワイナリーの再興も夢見てきました。19世紀にビエッラの町の近く、レッソーナ村に建てられたプロプリエタ・スペリーノは、親族の情熱的なトゥリン出身の栽培家フェリーチェ・スペリーノからデ・マルキ家に所有権が渡りました。そこでワインが造られたのは1952年が最後でした。1999年からパオロとその息子ルカは畑の改植に臨み、ワイナリーの施設も刷新させ、歴史あるこのワイナリーに新たな命を吹き込んだのです。レッソーナの地は再度再興のワイン産地としてイタリア中から注目されるようになりました。
プロプリエタ・スペリーノの8.5haの畑の多くは歴史あるオリ(イタリア語で「黄金」の意味)の町の、オロルンゴという土地に位置しています。その名前は黄色くミネラルが豊富な土壌に由来しており、防虫剤や化学肥料は使用せずに、ブドウは手摘みで収穫され、手作業で丁寧に選果されます。発酵はレッソーナにあるお城の中で、古くからワイナリーが使っている解放式の発酵槽で行います。ワインは常に見事な出来映えで、ピエモンテの高貴品種ネッビオーロの美しい個性が存分に表現されています。色合いは淡いですが凝縮感があり余韻に芳香が永く残ります。
For almost forty years Paolo De Marchi has produced one of Italy's greatest wines, the benchmark Tuscan Sangiovese "Cepparello." Yet, since the 1970s, he has dreamt of revitalising a small estate owned by his family in the foothills of the Alps of Northern Piemonte, his childhood home. Established in the 19th century in the village of Lessona, near Biella, Proprietà Sperino passed into the De Marchi family through their relative, Felice Sperino, a passionate viticulturist and professor from Turin. The last vintage had been made in 1952. In 1999, Paolo and his elder son, Luca, began replanting the vineyards and renovating the winery, giving new life to the estate and stimulating a renaissance of viticulture in this historic wine-growing area in what may be one of the most important wine restoration projects in Italy today.
The majority of Proprietà Sperino’s 8.5 hectares of vineyards sit on the sun-drenched, sub-alpine plateau of Orolungo in the historic district of Ori (meaning ‘gold’ in Italian), so-called for its yellow, mineral- rich sands. Grown without the use of herbicides or chemical fertilizers, the grapes are hand-harvested, hand-sorted, and fermented in open wooden vats in the centuries-old, gravity-fed cellar within the castle of Lessona. The resulting wine is consistently superb, and uniquely expresses the nobility of the Nebbiolo grape for which Piedmont is famed - light in colour yet intense, scented and long.
